When most people say they are 30 weeks--and it is the first pregnancy-- chances are there is at least 10 more weeks to go. Not for this gal!
At my last perinatal appointment, the doctor said that starting at 37 weeks, they will check for lung development. And if the lung development is good, she sees no reason to keep me pregnant and Flobee incubating. That wasn't verbatim, but it is pretty close. With babies of diabetics, lungs are one of the last things to develop, so I don't know what the chances of them being developed at 37 weeks will be. Oh the other thing she said was that she didn't want me to go over 39 weeks. And that at my 28W6D appointment, Flobee was measuring a week ahead in weight ... something like 3.6 lbs. That is kind of big for less than 30 weeks, but we also know those measurement calculations aren't always correct.
As this started to sink in, I realized that we had about 8-10 weeks left before Flobee arrived, which does NOT seem like a long time. Just six weeks ago we were in Phoenix picking up Flobee's hand-me-downs from his or her cousin.
I took a breather for a few days and posted in the Diabetic Mommies group on Facebook. My diabetic friend who is also a mother invited me to this group and they had some great feedback, pretty much saying what the doctor says is hogwash. One commented that they want to remove diabetic babies early for liability reasons when there is no reason to induce or schedule a birth so early. I agreed after putting thought into it. Just because the lungs are developed doesn't necessarily mean the rest of Flobee is ready, PROVIDING that I am under no additional risk. Diabetic pregnancies often come with many side effects and additional risks. However, at 30 weeks, I've been doing pretty darn well.
Our next midwife appointment is on the 22nd and since she is the one who will be delivering Flobee, I am eager to get her opinion on this 37-week decision.
